Little Worlds - Kate, 34

Kate in my arms, Hot Springs, 1991.
- from Little Worlds

Spring/Summer 1991
Kate arrives with force and her own agenda from day one. She’s a colicky baby, and her cries mix with the shrill cadence of the seventeen-year locusts. It’s hard to tell the sounds apart: is it the baby or some biblical reckoning? Or both?
I tell her stories, sometimes with Benny when he’s with us though she’s little more than an infant. They soothe and help quiet her stomach. I start with the past stories about young native children from this region and their families, hunting and harvesting wild foods for the winter. How they hid in the rocks and caves to avoid soldiers forcing them to move out West.
